Relatively recent software and systems development has been in the area of handling email spam. It is a growing problem, and we believe that the best solution is created by multiple independent efforts. In other words, having an ISP or central corporate filtering mail system, plus independent software on your desktop, plus politicians passing laws against it, are all good. However, it won't be solved until we fix the economics, and that will be hard socially to do. But those actions will take care of most of it.

More recently, extensive work on network storage as a function of time, rather than of space. Its kind of like a journaling file system, and in fact XFS is used as a part of the underlying infrastructure. However, the key idea, any given user can look at the data, at any given time. Simultaneously. The applications are quite broad, including data security forensics, Sarbanes-Oxley compliance, recovery from intrusions, real-time continuous backups, and fun with data oversubscription.

Since you are probably not familiar with this last one, but humor in data storage is rare, I'll explain it. Since data is allocated based on time, not space, you can give everyone 100 Terabytes of capacity on a little 1 Terabyte system. Its only a problem when they actually use it, so you can notice, add some more disks, and move on. This way, everyone who has an ego about having lot of space gets fulfilled, and you don't actually have to do anything about it until they actually do something. Which could take years.
